Synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy in the photon energy range h..nu.. = 22--130 eV has been used to study the electronic structure of intermetallic Laves-type compounds UMe/sub 2/, with Me = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni. With increasing 3d occupation, the 3d states show a much smaller shift away from E/sub F/ than expected from theory. Satellite emission at approx.7.5 eV binding energy, which resonates at the 3p threshold, indicates that the 3d bands are not completely filled in UNi/sub 2/. Resonant valence band photoemission around the U 5d threshold has been used to investigate the U 5f valence band DOS. These 5f states are located at E/sub F/ in UNi/sub 2/ with a FWHM that is much narrower than the experimental resolution ..delta..E = 0.6 eV. In UMn/sub 2/, 5f states are energetically less localized with a FWHM of approx.1.6 eV below E/sub F/.
