Session on superheavy atoms - chairman's summary

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5727776
Discussions have shown that the venture into the realm of superheavy atomic systems has proved to be very rewarding. The fact that we have to deal with collision systems is a complicating feature, but the relativistic features are clearly demonstrated in the wave functions and binding energies of the quasiatom. We have seen that relativistic effects completely dominate the description of the electron excitation processes and are responsible for the possibility of observing positron production from atomic processes. In searching for spontaneous positron production we have discovered narrow positron lines. They present us with an interesting puzzle. Resolving their origin is particularly provocative since it may have fundamental consequences. The possibility that the production of the peaks may involve the strong electric and magnetic fields generated in the superheavy collisions or the formation of giant nuclear complexes emphasizes the general interest in this puzzle involving the interplay of several fields of physics.
