Canada picks up momentum
Canada is going through one of the biggest periods of intense exploration and development drilling in its history. Drilling activity in 1979 rose by 24% over 1978, and additional growth of 9% is expected in 1980. Oil reserves and discoveries are on the rise, and Canada ranks seventh in the world with gas reserves of 59 TCF. The Canadian political climate and regulatory control seem to enhance exploration and development of energy resources, in contrast to the US experience. Drilling activities off shore along the East Coast, in the Beaufort Sea, and in the Arctic islands are described, as well as onshore activity in British Columbia and the Deep Basin of Alberta. Several new drilling records were set in Canada during 1979, including the world record for water depth and Canadian record for offshore drilling depth (20,023 ft in 4875 ft offshore Newfoundland) and the Canadian onshore depth record (19,905 ft near Calgary).
