Ionic micelles were studied as charged colloidal particles in order to interpret the qualitative difference between the theory of micellization kinetics and experimental results at high concentrations of surfactants. Results show that at low counterion concentration, the electrostatic repulsion prevents aggregation. At high counterion concentration, this reaction path is bypassed by a reversible aggregation, leading to increased rate of formation of proper micelles. The analysis yields an explanation for concentration dependence of the time constant for formation of nonionic micelles. 17 references.
