Fast electro-optic wavelength selection and frequency modulation in solid state lasers

Journal Article · · Lincoln Laboratory Journal; (USA)

The design limits, principles of operation, and performance of electrooptically tuned solid state lasers are discussed with emphasis on single-mode operation, fast wavelength selection, and large-bandwidth frequency modulation. In particular, it is shown that cavity dynamics limits the time for mode switching in a Ti:Al2O3 laser to 60 microsec. Linear voltage-to-frequency tuning by electrooptic modulation within one mode is found to be much faster; frequency tuning of 1 GHz with a 0.5-ns rise time has been obtained in a Nd:YAG laser. 22 refs.
