Amplitude analysis in pion-nucleus scattering

A simple ansatz for the elastic pion-nucleus scattering amplitude is employed which permits the extraction of an amplitude from the differential and total cross sections. Some of the ambiguities among the parameters are eliminated by looking at the effects of the Coulomb distortion on the combined ..pi../sup +/, ..pi../sup -/ data. A generalisation of the prescription for inelastic transitions is proposed though here the influence of the Coulomb field is much reduced. The use of these amplitudes in DWIA caLculations is discussed.
