A study on the interatomic bond distances of the metals in bimetallic catalysts was made. The method of measurement used was EXAFS. EXAFS is an element specific electron scattering technique in which a core electron ejected by an x-ray photon probes the local environment of the absorbing atom. The analysis method of EXAFS data for the determination of structural information was outlined. Data was presented on osmium-copper and platinum-iridium bimetallic catalysts. The alloy bond distance was compared to the bond distance of the pure metal in both cases.
