The Department of Energy's Biofuels and Municipal Waste Technology Division is development renewable energy supplies from wood through its Short Rotation Woody Crops Program as well as through research programs in biochemical and thermochemical conversion of wood to liquid - gasoline, ethanol, diesel oil - and gaseous fuels. Since 1978, DOE has supported research on short-rotation intensive culture (SRIC) at many sites throughout the US to increase wood resources and to improve wood-energy crop competitiveness. The goal is to develop specialized wood-energy crops to near-competitive levels within the next 10 years for the purpose of conversion to liquid and gaseous fuels. The challenges in meeting this goal are to increase significantly productivity of these new crops, broaden the applicability of SRIC to a wider range of sites, reduce harvesting and silvicultural costs, and improve wood-energy qualities for more efficient conversion to fuels that will replace petroleum-based fuels.
