Perforations--a prime source of well performance problems
This report covers the findings of an investigation into the conventional jet and bullet perforating processes. It has been found that either type of perforation produces severe restriction to fluid flow from the well bore into the reservoir, because of pulverized and compacted formation material and charge debris created during the perforating process. Failure to remove this flow restriction has led to improper sand control placement (gravel packs as well as consolidation treatments), injectivity and productivity impairment, and nonuniform flow from producing intervals. Methods for providing receptive and productive perforations are presented. Some have evolved as a result of this study. Examined are backsurging the perforations, sweep perforating, acid stimulation, hydraulic perforating, and underbalance perforating and/or backflowing. Phenomena have been observed during the course of this investigation which suggest new concepts regarding: (1) the manner in which acid stimulation treatments improve well productivity; (2) the cause of abnormal decline in the productivity of gravel packed wells during the production cycle; and (3) the relationship between injectivity into reservoirs and differential injection pressure.
