Method of fracturing with a high viscosity liquid

A method of fracturing a subsurface formation penetrated by a well allows use of pumps of low volumetric capacity in which a fracturing liquid having a viscosity in excess of 100,000 cp and and API liquid loss less than 5 ml/30 min is placed in a well. Propping agent particles having a size of 1/8 in. to 1 in. are suspended in the fracturing liquid. A readily pumpable following liquid is pumped into the well after the fracturing liquid to increase the pressure to initiate a fracture in the formation surrounding the well and displace the fracturing liquid into the fracture.
