We have undertaken research with the goal of establishing the common character of the upper concentration limits of ignition and systematizing them with consideration of the energy and chemical properties of combustible components. Here it is assumed that both factors act additively, and their contribution to the explosive limit correlates with the change of enthalpy. The quantitative theory of organic reactions points to the possibility of analyzing the reactivity of compounds in dependence on their structure. The upper concentration limits of ignition given in a reference served as the starting data. The explosive limit is viewed as a quantity additively composed of individual terms corresponding to structural fragments. Such fragments may be atoms or groups, bonds or their combination, or all of these. The number of fragments is found from the structural formula, and the contribution of each of them is calculated with consideration of experimental data and the thermodynamic characteristics of the fragment. The data were treated on a computer using a special program. The calculations established that the magnitude of the upper concentration limit of ignition for substances within all of the investigated homologous series varies according to a strict functional dependence. This study is evidence of the possibility of creating a uniform method for calculating the upper ignition limitfor all organic compounds, taking into account the length of the carbon skeleton, the presence of functional groups, the nature of the bonds of the compound and the oxidative medium. Moreover, to calculate the ignition limit of an uninvestigated substance it is sufficient to know the heats of its formation from elements and its structural formula.
