Reaction of organocopper compounds with organic halides are used for the preparation of a variety of cross-coupled products. The interest in using organic compounds of copper is explained to a considerable extent by the fact that they allow the introduction of organic halides containing any functional group into a coupling reaction. The coupling of copper phenylacetylide with aryl iodides to form substituted tolans is the most widely studied. However, these reactions are effected under rather severe conditions (boiling in dimethyl formamide for 8-16 h or in pyridine for 6 h). Here it has been shown that in the presence of catalytic amounts of palladium complexes, which are effective catalysts for coupling various oganometallic compounds with organic halides, copper phenylacetylide reacts with aryl iodide in HMPT under milder conditions.
