The University of Lowell 1-MW research reactor became critical in January 1975. Until 1981, the reactor was operated as part of a nuclear or energy center, which housed a Van-de-Graaff accelerator, several health physics laboratories, the Radiological Sciences Department, the Nuclear Engineering Department, a number of counting and handling rooms, and a machine stop. The university is a state-funded institution, and the center was funded separately from the rest of the school at about $700K/yr.
