This paper describes the contamination of the area surrounding the Stringfellow hazardous waste site in California. The disposal facility was in operation from 1956 to 1972. After heavy metals, PCBs, pesticides, organic pollutants, sulfates and chlorides had migrated from the area it was declared a priority site eligible for remedial action under CERCLA. Radioactivity was found in water samples in some areas necessitating the use of bottled water. The treatment and disposal processes as well as treatment monitoring are described in detail.
