Nucleosynthesis in stellar and supernova environments

Journal Article · · Annu. Rev. Nucl. Part. Sci.; (United States)

This article provides a review of the present status of research in nucleosynthesis, with emphasis on problems of nucleosynthesis in stellar and supernova environments. The authors begin by surveying abundance patterns in the Sun, our galaxy and other galaxies, calling attention to the manner in which such data serve to guide and to restrict nucleosynthesis theories. A brief overview of early historical developments is then followed by a survey of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis. Experimental and theoretical results from research in nuclear physics, which provide the empirical foundations of nuclesynthesis theories, are then briefly summarized. A more detailed discussion of specific mechanisms of heavy element synthesis, emphasizing the character of their operation in astrophysical environments, is then presented.
