Series compensation enables the system planner to overcome the limitations of geography and to reduce the electrical length of transmission line. Installation of series capacitors can provide a sufficient improvement in transient stability to eliminate the need for additional switching stations between generation and load. In applying series capacitors on ehv systems it is important to make sure that their installation to meet specific need does not introduce undue limitations on the flexibility of future system development. Graphs illustrate voltages up to 700 kV.
