Incentive pricing has added tight gas reserves to the market that were discovered long ago, but were not economical to produce until recently. Tight gas now accounts for ca 5% of U.S. gas production. Although there is presently less activity due to lower prices, research on well stimulation and massive hydraulic fracturing is proceeding because of the expectation that a stronger market will eventually come. Recoverable tight gas reserves are estimated to be as much as 570 tcf, with ca 60% of those reserves in easily developed blanket sands.
