Pneumatic crude-unit controls modernized

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)

Advanced control of a pneumatically controlled plant with a modern distributed digital instrumentation system is possible without replacing existing pneumatic transmitters and control elements. The control system sensors may have to be augmented, but they do not have to be replaced. A modernized control system for a pneumatically controlled crude topping unit (CTU) at Conoco Inc.'s Ponca City, Okla., refinery was recently started up. Pneumatic instruments are not proposed for new, grassroots plants, in spite of the comfort and experience with that instrument type. Electronic instruments are as reliable, they have no hysteresis, and they are easier to maintain than their pneumatic counterparts.
