Serving as a conduit between a floating vessel and seafloor drilling operations, the drilling riser is subject to several basic external forces: the weight of the riser joints, the mud weight, the external buoyancy attached to it, pull by the stabilizing tensions, wave and current forces, and reaction forces at the drill vessel and the blowout preventer stack. Keeping these forces to a minimum requires careful vessel positioning, calculating the best riser operating tension for the drill site, and using a buoyancy system in deeper water.
