When David Lange became prime minister of New Zealand in 1984, he declared the nation a nuclear-free zone. He ban war ships which carried nuclear weapons from The Auckland harbor. The United States was angered by this decision and in August of 1986 terminate the ANZUS alliance, a thirty five year old mutual defense pact among New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. New Zealand's antinuclear stand has caused it to lose its western allies and now they are afraid that it will hurt their export trade.
