The renormalized charge in noncompact lattice QED with staggered fermions is calculated using simulation data for {l angle}{bar {psi}}{psi}{r angle} and {l angle}{ital F}{sub {mu}{nu}}{sup 2}{r angle} as input. One outcome is that the charge vanishes in the infinite-cutoff limit for all values of the bare charge up to and including the chiral-phase-transition point. The analysis suggests that the scaling region of the latter is describable by an effective action containing Yukawa as well as gauge interactions.
