Apparatus and method for increasing power output of an internal combustion engine
This patent describes an internal combustion engine including: a combustion chamber; an intake port through which an air/fuel mixture is introduceable into the combustion chamber; an intake passage communicating with the intake port for flowing the air/fuel mixture to the combustion chamber; and an intake valve reciprocally moveable between (a) a first open position for introduction of the air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber via the intake port, and (b) a second closed position accommodating combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. The intake passage has a curved portion in the vicinity of the combustion chamber, comprising a convexly curved interior surface. The improvement comprises: a fluid withdrawal passage entering the curved portion of the intake passage at its convexly curved interior surface, and having an outer end external to the intake passage; and means for applying suction to the outer end of the fluid withdrawal passage, during flow of the air/fuel mixture through the intake passage from the intake port to the combustion chamber while the intake valve is in the first position, to withdraw a minor portion of the air/fuel mixture and increase the rate of the flow of air/fuel mixture to the combustion chamber.
