Atmospheric deposition and cation leaching

This paper reviews many of the important aspects of soil chemistry that play a role in the rates of soil acidification and contains comparisons of solution chemistry of two sites not subject to acidic precipitation (pH = 5.6) with seven sites that are (pH 4.8 to 4.0). The pH and concentrations of basic cations, aluminum, and anions were determined as precipitation moved through the forest canopy and percolated through the soil profile. Changes in solution chemistry reflect changes in soil chemistry and potential effects on exchangeable cations due to soil cation leaching.
