Radio emission from supernova SN 1986J in NGC 891

Radio emissions from SN 1986J at 90, 20, and 6 cm were observed by the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the VLA. The results suggest that free-free absorption may occur in a hot optically thick thermal region surrounding the SN which slowly becomes optically thin at low frequencies. Only the 90-cm data are consistent with the circumstellar interaction model. The high radio luminosity of the SN 1986J can be explained by an extremely massive precursor and an unusually dense surrounding medium. 26 refs.
