The H. Brown Company, Inc., site was listed on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) National Priorities List (NPL) on June 10, 1986. The site, located in an industrial and commercial area of Walker, Michigan, was the setting of a lead-acid battery reclamation operation from 1961 to 1982, and non-ferrous metal salvage after 1982. Soils and groundwater on and near the site contain lead along with arsenic, cadmium, chromium and nickel at levels of human health concern. The site is considered a public health hazard due to the presence of contaminants in the soil that have in the past resulted in exposure for on-site workers.
