Gravel packing ups producing rates, does well in slim holes
Humble Oil and Refining Co.'s SE. production division is pleased with recent successes in gravel packing of offshore wells. The wells involved include conventional 7-in. cased and open-hole as well as slim-hole completion using 3-1/2 and 2-7/8-in. tubing for casing. Besides monetary savings, Humble says that the gravel-pack completions permit higher flow rates than are possible in completions with other methods of sand consolidation, and that longer intervals can be opened for production. success with screens in conventional wells prompted Humble to try the same technique in small-diameter tubingless completions. After cementing, perforating, sand packing (or fracturing), washing out, and running a 1 or 1-1/4-in.-OD screen, 2 methods were tried for placement of the gravel. The first method used conventional techniques and a crossover tool to place the gravel. In the second, a precalculated amount of gravel was placed in the well and the screen was washed through the gravel and into position. In either case, a wire-line packer was used on top of the screen to prevent gravel movement up hole. So far, Humble has completed about 23 jobs in 3-1/2 and 2-7/8-in. completions. Of these, 15 were unqualified successes, 2 were failures, and 9 have not been evaluated. Most jobs so far have been workovers or recompletions.
