An experiment (apparatus and procedure) which can be used in petroleum engineering laboratory courses, demonstrates the practical applicability of direct electric current for well-bore stimulation in plugged formations. Formations become damaged around the well-bore owing to dispersion and swelling of clays by fresh water, such as mud filtrate. This greatly decreases the productivity of the oil zone. The relative permeability to oil can be increased in these cases as a result of removal of water and/or electrochemical treatment which destroys clays.
