Astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, San Diego is carried out under the auspices of the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (CASS). CASS is an organized research unit formed to provide an interdisiplinary focus for activities in the general areas of astronomy, astrophysics, space science, and cosmochemistry. This report lists the faculty of CASS and describes personnel events. Progress in the following research areas is reported: theoretical work (high energy astrophysics, fundamental processes, and nuclear astrophysics), x-ray and gamma-ray astronomy (archival data analysis, high energy x-ray timing experiment, high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy, gamma-ray bursts, Nuclear Astrophysics Explorer [NAE] and International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory [INTEGRAL], and NASA's MAX 91 program), optical and ultraviolet astronomy (quasi-stellar objects, galaxies, redshifts, cosmology, the Hubble Space Telescope, and astronometry), infrared astronomy, solar physics, radio and space science, and space plasma physics. A list of publications is provided following the discussion of the research programs.
