A method is described of increasing the cell voltage of an electrochemical cell having a porous metal electrode in contact with an oxygen-transporting vapor deposited ceramic electrolyte comprising (A) heating the metal electrode particles to at least their oxidation temperature; (B) passing oxygen through the oxygen-transporting ceramic electrolyte to the surface of the metal electrode particles, whereby a portion of the metal electrode particles are oxidized, forming a metal oxide layer between the metal electrode particles and the electrolyte; and (C) reducing the metal oxide layer to the metal.
