Separation cell and scavenger cell froths treatment

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5704854
In the hot-water process for treating bituminous tar sands, an improvement consists of (1) diluting the primary froth with a hydrocarbon diluent miscible with the bitumen in the primary froth and capable of lowering its specific gravity; (2) settling the diluted froth to produce an upper overflow layer comprising bitumen-diluent and a lower underflow layer comprising sand, mineral, and water; (3) separately removing the upper overflow bitumen-diluent layer and the lower underflow layer; (4) subjecting the secondary bitumen froth with or without prior settling to a centrifuging operation to recover a bitumen product stream reduced in mineral content compared to the bitumen product layer; and (5) removing the bitumen product stream from Step (4) and combining it with the upper overflow bitumen-diluent layer from Step (3) to form a mixture suitable for further upgrading.
