Title: Economical clean carbon and gaseous fuels from coal and other carbonaceous raw materials. [HYDROCARB Process]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5702693

A process is proposed, the HYDROCARB Process, which produces economical clean particulate carbon fuels (liquid and/or solid) and either a hydrogen-rich or a methane-rich gaseous co-product fuel or both. It is basically a two-step process consisting of essentially complete hydropyrolysis of a carbonaceous feedstock such as coal to form primarily methane followed by thermal cracking of this methane-rich gas, after dewatering, to micron-size carbon particulates (carbon black) and hydrogen. The overall carbon conversion and thermal efficiencies obtained, 99+% and 90%, respectively, are exceptionally high. 23 refs., 12 figs., 8 tabs.
