Antiproton-proton total and elastic cross-sections at the CERN ISR and the SPS collider

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5702053
Three experiments, currently running at CERN, are devoted to the measurement of total and elastic cross-sections in antiproton-proton collisions: experiments R210 and R211 at the ISR, and Experiment UA4 at the SPS Collider. The various experimental techniques and setups are briefly described, and the most recent results obtained are reported. The combined center-of-mass energy range of the three experiments is 31 < ..sqrt..s < 540 GeV. In this range the anti-pp/sub 2/ total cross-section is found to rise approximately like (ln s)/sup 2/, as does the pp total cross-section, and the difference, sigma/sub tot/ (anti-pp) - sigma/sub tot/(pp), tends to zero as s/sup ..cap alpha..-1/, with ..cap alpha.. approx. = 1/2.
