Progress on the research and development of photovoltaics in 1984 is summarized. Some of the achievements in materials, collector, and systems research are presented. The major materials research activity in 1984 was the single junction thin films research which received over 12 million dollars in funding. The Flat Plate Solar Array Project was yet another major recipient of research funding with just over seven million dollars. Other research achievements are briefly discussed and include: multijunction and innovative concepts, silicon materials, concentrator collectors, module reliability, and balance of system developments.
