The strong CP problem and the Peccei-Quinn solution are briefly reviewed. The properties of the Peccei-Quinn axion are derived, and shown to be phenomenologically unacceptable. A recently proposed generalization of the Peccei-Quinn solution is described, and shown to lead to a light, very weakly coupled axion.
