Method for moving high tonnage biomass from field to furnace

Sugar cane harvesting and transport equipment can be used for harvesting frozen sugar cane or alternate crops for biomass after the harvest for sugar production is completed. Use of a rotary rake for preparing windrows of sugarcane residue and use of a forage harvester and a sound baler for recovering the material is satisfactory. The field residue contained high amounts of sulfur and ash, which may cause pollution problems. Material baled with a round baler had twice the bulk density of forage chopped material. A hay crumper reduced the drying time of residue windrows so that the residue could be collected before the ratoon crop sprouted, thus avoiding crop damage by the equipment.
