Chemical reactivity of polycyclic organic compounds adsorbed on coal fly ash and related solid surfaces: Final report, July 1, 1984-June 30, 1987

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5701221

Our work has largely been concerned with the phototransformation of PAHs adsorbed on coal ashes and on various model adsorbents (silica gel, activated alumina, porous glass, graphite). PAHs investigated were: pyrene, anthracene, benzopyrene, benzanthracene, and phenanthrene. PAH vapors were deposited onto adsorbent surfaces. Some were illuminated. Adsorbents were then analyzed for PAH content. Results of chemical composition of adsorbents are presented. Observed reactivities of the PAHs are summarized. It was found that the carbon content of fly ash affected the photodecomposition. Fractionation of coal ashes was then performed. Enthalpies of adsorption of PAHs on ash and the adsorption isotherms for pyrene are presented. Also included in this study is the reactivity of PAHs in the presence of NO/sub 2/. 85 refs., 8 figs., 9 tabs. (CBS)
