Patent ·
OSTI ID:5700741
A system is described for the rotary drilling of a deviated wellbore into the earth consisting of: (a) a drill string, (b) a drill bit, (c) a drill motor for rotating the drill bit independently of rotation of the drill string, (d) a bent sub affixing the drill motor to the lower end of the drill string for directing the axis of rotation of the drill bit such that it is angularly displaced from the axis of the drill string, (e) a measuring-while-drilling system for providing an indication of the directivity of the wellbore, (f) means responsive to the measuring-while-drilling system for rotating the drill string along with the independent rotation of the drill bit for effecting a straight path for the wellbore, and (g) means responsive to the measuring-while-drilling system for stopping the rotation of the drill string and maintaining only rotation of the drill bit for effecting a change in the direction of the wellbore from the straight path.
