Ionization probability of the 3dsigma molecular orbital in heavy-ion collisions

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., A; (United States)
New data on the impact-parameter dependence of K- and L-x-ray production in /sub 18/Ar+/sub 50/Sn collisions reported by Fintz et al. and on K-x-ray production in /sub 28/Ni+ /sub 50/Sn and /sub 28/Ni+/sub 82/Pb collisions by Johnson et al. are compared with molecular model calculations. The latter are based on the united-atom ionization model of Briggs, applied to the 3dsigma molecular orbital and corrected for the dependence of the 3dsigma binding energy on internuclear distance. Overall, reasonable agreement between theory and experiment is found.
