Title: Control rod materials and burnable poisons: an evaluation of the state of the art and needs for technology development, July 1980. Final report. [PWR; BWR]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5698641

This study was made for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to determine areas of technology that need further research and development in order to resolve any current problems related to the use of control rod and burnable poison materials, to define their performance limits more accurately, and to develop new designs and alternate materials that will be of economic benefit to utilities. To this end, the S.M. Stoller Corporation (SMSC) reviewed the technology of the materials, including the designs and design criteria of the components, their fabrication and quality control, their properties and in-reactor behavior, their commercial service experience and particularly the problems experienced and the resolutions applied. Additional reviews included an evaluation of potential computer codes that could be used to model control and burnable poison elements, and a survey of available clad material properties.
