Linear program optimization of refinery spreadsheets

The author says spreadsheet refinery programming models make it possible to show a complex petroleum refining operation in mathematical form. The time required for rebalancing the refinery model to show all changes on its flow diagram is about three seconds with present day microcomputers. Linear programming helps make the spreadsheet optimization more automatic. Where linearized, the spreadsheet model will have almost the same appearance as the nonlinear model. However, the refinery spreadsheet can also be optimized by coupling to the linear program optimizer. Upon execution, optimum values of the decision variables and their functions will be reported on the spreadsheet. The user now has the option to choose the operations he wishes to optimize linearly, those he wishes to optimize by iteration and those he wishes only to simulate. Spreadsheet refinery programming is in its infancy, however, the author says there is a good probability there that it will be improved in the future.
