Remote maintenance experience with the dissolvers in the Tokai reprocessing plant

Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5697263
Radioactive leak accidents in two of the enriched uranium dissolvers occurred in April 1982 and February 1983, respectively. To overcome this serious situation, the development of a remote maintenance system to restore the dissolvers in trouble was begun. This summary describes a series of restoration processes involving the development of a remote repair and inspection system, actual repair and inspection work of the dissolvers, and periodical inspection after operation. Remote maintenance systems developed at this time are not only applicable to the nuclear field aimed at reducing radiation exposures to personnel and at increasing operational reliability of the facility, but it can also be utilized in other industrial fields.
