Effect of alloying elements on environmental cracking of Ni-base alloys in sour gas environment

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5695565

Ni-Cr-Mo alloys may be damaged by stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in high temperature sour gas environments which contain acid and elemental sulfur. To evaluate the effects of alloying elements in Ni base alloys on the cracking, SCC resistance of various alloys was examined in autoclave environments simulating sour gas wells with acetic acid and elemental sulfur. Further, the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of alloys was measured by SSRT test. Results indicated that high amount of Mo remarkably increased SCC resistance and HE as also affected by Ni, Mo and Ti.
