The successful experience of economical and efficient design compressors, together with the present thrust for energy-saving concepts, has led to the utilization of new types of drives and new driver combinations. Synchronous motors, induction motor/hot gas expander, induction motor/steam turbine, and motor generator/steam turbine combinations are being used successfully. Such configurations involve trains of drivers and require several engineering modification. An increasing number of applications using synchronous motor drives are beginning to be seen. The main features of this type of motor were included. Many packaged units were discussed: centrifugal unit driven by a double-ended induction motor and a hot gas expander; capacity package compressor driven by a combined induction motor and steam turbine mounted on a single base; combined motor/turbine drive. The proper selection of air compressor packages and drivers can greatly enhance the energy conservation of an operation. (DP)
