Emerging global power companies
This is an exciting time in the international electric power business. In the next few years, the actions taken by the existing market leaders will determine who will survive to dominate the industry. There is still room for a few more major competitors in this rapidly growing market, but they better move fast because time is running out. An international marketplace for electric power is a recent phenomenon that started in the early 1990s - led by a few U.K. and U.S. firms - and has developed at an extraordinary rate. Today, there are over 1,000 memorandums of understanding between countries and developers to build new power plants. The majority of U.K. distribution companies are in U.S. hands and both U.K. and U.S. companies are buying into the Australian market. The international power business has rapidly become a multi-billion dollar business growing at double digit rates that is dominated by U.S. (55 percent) and U.K. (25 percent) firms. Asia is potentially the largest market, but success rates are higher in Latin America. Eastern Europe and the Middle East are latecomers on the scene and are providing new opportunities. Africa is virtually untouched. The rapidity of the growth in the market is matched by the pace of change in the way business is carried out and the structure of the participating companies. Although the time frame is short - at most ten years - there is sufficient experience to suggest both the shape of the emerging market and the nature of the companies that will dominate it.
