Dump-valve application ensures retrieval of wireline tool

A new solenoid-operated dump-valve has been developed which is helping prevent a wireline formation testing device from getting stuck downhole. The system is in use for Welex's Multi-Set Tester (MST), a wireline formation test tool designed to recover samples of formation fluids and measure sampling and reservoir pressures. It provides an emergency hydraulic bleed system that instantly dumps in the event of an electrical system or mechanical failure. When power is cut, the valve opens, bleeding the hydraulic fluid pressure and allowing the packer to retract in less than 15 seconds, cutting bleed and retracting time by approximately 2.5 minutes.
