Promise has been shown for the use of atomic fluorine in the synthesis of thermally unstable compounds including the higher fluorides of transition metals since the use of atomic fluorine as a reagent permits carrying out fluorination reactions with high rates and yields at low temperatures. One of the major problems in this method is the transfer of the atoms from the generation zone to the chemical reaction zone. However, data on the rate constants for the homogeneous recombination of fluorine atoms are still virtually absent from the literature, although such recombination of atoms has a significant effect on the concentration of atoms in the gas flow. In the present work, we measure the reate constants for the homogeneous recombination of fluorine atoms to yield fluorine (F/sub 2/), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and the hexafluorides of molybdenum, tungsten, rhenium, osmium, iridium and uranium at 300 +- 2/sup 0/C using ESR. 4 figures.
