The fabrication, heat treatment and properties of high chromium-molybdenum iron coatings are described. Such castings are readily made must be allowed to cool slowly in the mold to allow considerable precipitation of secondary carbides and, provided they are alloyed sufficiently for the cooled matrix to be austenitic and martensitic, have a high hardness and good resistance to abrasion. For particular alloys and castings for extreme service, special heat treatments are recommended Such alloys with 0.5 to 2 or more percent carbon provide reasonable resistance to both corrosion and erosion.
