Electric and hybrid vehicle program. Quarterly report, October-December 1979

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5691883
This publication reports on the enactment of legislation which offers major automobile manufacturers the alternative of including EVs in their fleets as a means of meeting prescribed Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. The legislation will not have immediate impact, but it presages possible large increases of EVs in the nation's automobile population in years to come. Strides are being made in battery improvements, as reported in the feature section, EV's Reach for 100-Mile Range, and commercialization plans look to substantial production increases by 1986. Another section assesses the potential for hybrid vehicles and summarizes results of Phase 1 studies in the Near-Term Hybrid Vehicle Program. The propulsion system R and D progress is reported for component technology subsystem development.
