Alternatives for energy savings at plant level for the production of alcohol for use as automotive fuel

Conference · · Biotechnol. Bioeng. Symp.; (United States)

Some countries have developed extensive projects for the massive production of alcohol from carbohydrates to be utilized as a partial substitute for gasoline. Central American countries like Guatamala base their economy of agriculture. The market trend in the sugar cane industry will set the pace for the introduction of the various technological advances in alcohol production, but a new image is developing in the sugar cane processing itself, that is bypass the sugar manufacturing and ferment directly the cane juice. The implicit advantage is the steam generation by the onsite-producted bagasse. The search for better ways to convert the sugar into the alcohol led to experiments and tests of both continuous and yeast recycle fermentation system. A comparison of a batch fermentation and a batch with recycled yeast fermentation was included. 6 figures.
