Sintered (uranium-plutonium) dioxide pellets

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5690742

Recognizing the diversity of manufacturing methods and the many special chemical and physical requirements imposed by operating conditions, the specification is intended to provide the nuclear industry with a general standard for uranium-plutonium dioxide pellets for thermal reactor use. The specification applies to pellets containing plutonium additions up to 10 wt %. The isotopic composition of the diluent uranium shall be of any U-235 composition, and the plutonium component shall be as normally prepared by in-reactor neutron irradiation of uranium having less than 5% U-235. The specification includes chemical requirements (stoichiometry and content of uranium, plutonium, americium, impurities, moisture, and gas), nuclear requirements (isotopic content, effective fissile content, equivalent boron content, and reactivity), physical characteristics (pellet density, dimensions, grain size, pore morphology, homogeneity, particle size and distribution, pellet integrity, chips, cleanliness and workmanship), identification, densification, sampling, testing, certification, packaging, and shipping.
